INSTITUTIONAL MEMBERSHIP REGULATIONS AND PROCEDURES STUDENT SERVICES, FACILITIES, UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULA SCHOOL OF BUSINESS TEACHERS COLLEGE MATT LOCKE ELLIS COLLEGE | Liberal Arts Core Requirements One of the distinguishing characteristics of a quality liberal arts education is a strong general education program. The university has strengthened its Liberal Arts Core in recent years and is continuing to strengthen and integrate this core of courses which provides graduates with that knowledge essential for a liberal education. The university is dedicated to exploring themes and ideas that cross disciplines, such as writing across the curriculum, interdisciplinary faculty consultation, and course development. All first time entering freshmen must take GEN 1031, Henderson Seminar, during the freshman year. A variety of topics will be presented to acquaint the student with the university and higher education. American Culture for International Students, GEN1041, is a mandatory course designed for all international students new to the United States. This course is intended to help international students to understand American values, laws, customs, family and social issues, and help them to cope with cultural differences. The course is required for all international students in their first semester at the university. (Exception are students transferring from United States universities above the rank of freshman.) All designated students must pass the course with a grade "C" or above. The following areas of study are required of all students. The general goal in each area is stated. Courses meeting the requirement in each area are listed. Some major areas modify the sequence in which required courses are taken and have preferences among the courses listed. Students should consult with their major area advisor and the curricula specified for the major and the degree planned.
