Academic Scholarships

Henderson scholarship funds are limited to the level of the student's direct obligation to the University plus a reasonable amount ($600 per term) for books and supplies from the on-campus bookstore, unless otherwise stipulated. Terms and conditions are subject to change and will be governed by the then current university scholarship policies. Academic tuition scholarship coverage is limited to a maximum of (16) credit hours. Enrolled students are not eligible to apply for first-time freshman scholarships or upgrades after classes begin. All scholarships are limited to funds available. Priority deadline is noted on the scholarship application.

Board of Trustees Scholarship: (Tuition, room and board, and $1,000 yearly stipend) This scholarship may be offered to high school graduates with an ACT composite score of 30 -36 or 1310 - 1600 recentered SAT and 3.25 cumulative high school grade point average, or have been identified as a National Merit Scholar or National Achievement Scholar. Scholarship will cover up to 16 credit hours per semester and is renewable for four years.

Presidential Academic Scholarship: (Tuition, room and board) This scholarship may be offered to high school graduates with an ACT composite score of 27-29 or 1200-1300 recentered SAT. Scholarship will cover up to 16 credit hours per semester and is renewable for four years.

University Academic Scholarship: (Tuition and up to $109 fees per semester) This scholarship may be offered to high school graduates with an ACT composite of 24-26, or 1090-1190 recentered SAT, or Valedictorian of their high school graduating class. Scholarship will cover up to 16 credit hours per semester and is renewable for four years.

Academic Success Scholarship: ($700 per semester) This scholarship may be offered to high school graduates with an ACT composite of 21-23, or 970-1080 recentered SAT, or Salutatorian of their high school graduating class. Renewable for four years.

Reddie Spirit Award: (Dollar amount determined by University Committee) This award will be based on ACT score, grade point average, class rank and extracurricular activities. Students must submit an essay on "Why I want to attend Henderson State University." Also, students will need a recommendation from a principal, counselor or teacher. The Reddie Spirit Award will be awarded in varying amounts. The scholarship award will be determined by the university committee and is a final one-year award.

Community College Transfer Scholarship: (Tuition) This scholarship may be offered to community college transfer students with a minimum of 60 transferable credit hours or an associate's degree with a 3.00 cumulative grade point average, based on a 4.00 point system. Scholarship will cover up to 16 credit hours per semester and is renewable for two years.

Community College President's Scholarship: (Tuition) A scholarship will be available to the president of each Arkansas public community college to award to a selected student to attend Henderson State University. Scholarship will cover up to 16 credit hours per semester and is renewable for two years.

Performance Scholarships

Athletic Scholarships of varying amounts are awarded to selected students who play varsity sports on the recommendation of the Director of Athletics.

Band Scholarships are awarded to talented students who are recommended by the appropriate music instructor and the chair of the Department of Music. Scholarship amounts vary and are renewable each year. To apply, contact the music department chair.

Music Scholarships are awarded to talented keyboard, vocal, composition and choir students who are recommended by the appropriate music instructor and the chair of the Department of Music. Scholarship amounts vary and are renewable each year. To apply, contact the music department chair.

Oracle Scholarships are awarded on a limited basis to students interested in journalism and in working with the Henderson school newspaper. To apply, contact the Oracle sponsor for qualifications and requirements.

Radio Station Scholarships are awarded on a limited basis to students interested in working with the Henderson radio station. To apply, contact the radio station sponsor for qualifications and requirements.

Star Scholarships are awarded on a limited basis to students for participation in the preparation of the Henderson yearbook. To apply, contact the yearbook sponsor.

Television Scholarships are awarded on a limited basis to advanced television students who are interested in producing programming for HTV. To apply, contact the advisor of HTV.

Theatre Scholarships are awarded by the theatre program on a limited basis to talented students who participate in university theatre activities. To apply, contact the Department of Communication and Theatre Arts.

Faculty/Staff Remission of Fees: Available to employees (and their dependents as determined by status as an income tax exemption) who are employed at least one-half time by the University. (Adjunct faculty, persons whose salaries are paid by agencies other than the university and other temporary employees do not qualify for the benefit.) This is a fringe benefit to the employee and is not a student scholarship. For current criteria, refer to most recent revision of the remission form. Applications are available in the Office of Financial Aid and on the Henderson website.

Henderson Alumni Legacy Waiver: Out-of-state tuition will be waived for dependents of alumni who earned a degree from Henderson State University if dependents are eligible for admission to the university. Dependents must reside in university-owned housing, (this does not include Whispering Oaks) participate in at least a ten (10) meal plan and maintain satisfactory academic progress as defined in the university catalog. Waiver coverage is limited to a maximum of (16) credit hours. Application must be made when applying for admission to the university.

Out-Of-State Waiver: Out-of-state waivers are available upon application and approval. Recipients must enroll in a minimum of (12) credit hours and maintain satisfactory academic progress. Recipients must live in university-owned housing (this does not include Whispering Oaks) and participate in at least a ten (10) meal plan. Waiver coverage is limited to a maximum of (16) credit hours. Application must be made when applying for admission to the university.

Conditions & Institutional Scholarship Requirements

Academic Scholarships

Recipients must enroll in and complete a minimum of fourteen (14) credit hours each term with a minimum 2.50 cumulative grade point average at the end of fall term and a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average at the end of spring term. Board of Trustees Scholarship recipients must have a minimum 3.25 cumulative grade point average at the end of spring term. Retention criteria will be reviewed at the end of each fall and spring term. Recipients not meeting the requirements will be dropped from the scholarship.

Effective Fall 2006, students who fail to meet scholarship retention criteria at the end of fall or spring term due to cumulative grade point average and/or credit hours completed, may regain eligibility for the following fall term by completing the required number of hours and/or cumulative grade point average for the current academic year at students’ own expense or by eligibility for other financial aid funds.

Scholarship recipients are required to complete a minimum of 28 credit hours for the academic year with a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average. Board of Trustees Scholarship recipients must have a minimum 3.25 cumulative grade point average. Summer school may be used to achieve this goal. All hours used to regain eligibility must be taken at Henderson State University. No transfer hours will be allowed.

The option to regain eligibility is allowed only one time. If scholarship is lost a second time, this option is not available.

Terms and conditions of each subsequent renewal are subject to change and will be governed by the then current university scholarship policies.

*Please note.* *Completion of only the minimum number of hours required to maintain scholarships will not generate a sufficient number of hours for graduation in an eight semester period.*

Out-Of-State Waivers

Recipients must enroll in a minimum of (12) credit hours and maintain satisfactory academic progress. Recipients must live in university-owned housing (this does not include Whispering Oaks) and participate in at least a ten (10) meal plan. Recipients who withdraw from the university-owned housing or the minimum ten (10) meal plan, will be ineligible for future out-of-state waivers.

All out-of-state waiver recipients will be reviewed at the end of the fall term. Recipients not meeting satisfactory academic progress requirements will be ineligible for future out-of-state waivers.

Henderson Alumni Legacy Waiver

Housing and Financial Aid

Students receiving scholarships that include housing must live in university-owned housing (this does not include Whispering Oaks) and participate in at least a ten (10) meal plan.

Definition of the term complete: receive a grade (A, B, C, or D).

Other Scholarships

James E. Durham Scholarship is a jointly administered (English and theatre arts) scholarship awarded each year to an outstanding junior or senior in either theatre arts or English who maintains a 3.00 cumulative grade point average. Forensics Scholarships are awarded on a limited basis to promising students who participate in intercollegiate debate and who maintain a 2.50 cumulative grade point average. To apply, contact the Department of Communication and Theatre Arts.

Florence Atchley Powell, Amy Jean Greene, P.W. Turrentine Scholarships are allocated through the Alumni Association. These scholarships are limited to juniors and seniors with a 2.50 or higher cumulative grade point average. Applications are available in the Office of Alumni Services and the Office of Financial Aid.

James W. Workman Scholarship is allocated through the Alumni Association. It is for sophomores, juniors, or seniors with a 3.00 or higher cumulative grade point average. Applications are available in the Office of Alumni Services and the Office of Financial Aid.

Maynor-Hatton Scholarship is awarded each fall to a sophomore or above preferably majoring in the education specialization in family and consumer sciences with a 2.50 cumulative grade point average. To apply, contact the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences.

Marilyn Humphries Friday Scholarship is awarded each fall to a junior or senior majoring in family and consumer sciences with a 3.00 cumulative grade point average. To apply, contact the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences.

Allen Stanton Scholarship is awarded each fall to a freshman in family and consumer sciences at Henderson State University with a 3.00 cumulative grade point average. To apply, contact the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences.

Carl and Nellie Tucker Scholarship is awarded each fall to any student majoring in family and consumer sciences with a 3.00 cumulative grade point average. To apply, contact the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences.

Florence Turpentine Scholarship is awarded each year to an outstanding Henderson junior or senior involved in theatre. Scholarship pays one-half tuition for two semesters. To apply, contact the Department of Communication and Theatre Arts.

Students are encouraged to investigate additional aid programs offered by: Arkansas Department of Higher Education (www.adhe.edu); Americorps (www.americorps.org); U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (www.gibill.va.gov ); and Arkansas Department of Workforce Education (dwe.arkansas.gov). Many companies, businesses, and labor organizations have aid programs for employees and their dependents. Foundations, religious organizations, civic groups, community organizations, and associations connected with specific academic majors may offer scholarships. The Office of Financial Aid and high school counselors may have applications and additional information.
